This month on Life at Appinio, we're shining a spotlight on women in leadership—celebrating their resilience, innovation, and the lasting impact they make. Leaders like our COO, Gemma, exemplify the power of strong, inclusive leadership, creating workplaces where growth, empowerment, and success thrive.
Gemma has kindly shared some of her path to leadership, the lessons she has learned along the way, and her thoughts on the progress of Women in leadership.
The journey to leadership
From an early age, Gemma took on responsibilities beyond her role, always seeking opportunities to grow and make a meaningful impact. Her natural interest toward collaboration, problem-solving, and strategic execution led her to a leadership role where she could maximise the potential of those around her.
"Leadership, for me, was a natural evolution of my desire to create meaningful change and orchestrate different areas of an organisation to drive success.", she shares.
Gemma's leadership style is deeply influenced by her parents - her father’s passion and drive, and her mother’s resilience and strength. Their values have shaped her approach, allowing her to balance ambition with empathy and shaping her into the leader she is today.
Lessons in growth and overcoming challenges
While many women in leadership encounter biases and experience imposter syndrome, Gemma has approached her journey with confidence. Instead of internalising doubts or questioning her place at the table, she chooses to own her space unapologetically. While she acknowledges the challenges, she remains confident and composed, leading with authenticity and strength.
“ I have always trusted in my abilities and believed in the value I bring. Nothing I’ve achieved has come without effort — it’s been the result of discipline, resilience, and hard work.”
For those struggling with imposter syndrome, Gemma offers this advice: “ I would say this: Remind yourself of everything you have accomplished, recognise that you deserve to be where you are, and focus on continuous learning rather than self-doubt. Confidence grows when you acknowledge your progress and take ownership of your success.”

The future of women in leadership
Reflecting on the progress of women in leadership, Gemma recognises the strides made but also emphasises the need for more cultural and organisational changes. While more women now hold high-level positions across industries, achieving true equity remains a challenge.
When thinking about the future of women in leadership, Gemma sees some more work that needs to be done. She believes that organisations must actively create environments that allow women to grow—through mentorship, inclusive cultures, and policies that support work-life balance.
"True progress happens not just in the workplace but in the way we raise the next generations, challenge outdated gender expectations, and create environments where both men and women have equal opportunities to thrive."
Final thoughts: Stepping into our power
At the heart of Gemma’s leadership philosophy is the belief that women don’t need special treatment—just fair opportunities.
Her message to all women in leadership:"We should never doubt that we can make a difference. Women have an incredible impact—whether in business, leadership, or personal spheres—and we must continue to leverage that."
As we continue to celebrate women in leadership, let’s take inspiration from leaders like Gemma, whose dedication and vision inspire progress. By embracing their example, we can continue driving meaningful change for a more inclusive future, where everyone has the opportunity to thrive, regardless of gender.
